Our Ethos
At Hatherden we focus on providing a vibrant learning environment in which each child is helped and encouraged to realise his or her full potential. We strive to ensure that our children leave us inspired, open-minded, imaginative and curious, creative, tolerant and caring.
Teaching reflects the wide range of learning styles evident among our children and successes within and outside school are always celebrated. We have high expectations of ourselves as a learning community where children interact with staff who are always looking to analyse and improve their capacity to bring out the very best in our pupils. Children share in the construction of our codes of conduct and these help to provide a secure and calm environment in which excellent learning, and the development of a sense of consideration for others, can take place.
Within each class children progress at their own speed and work is given which best matches the needs and abilities of the individual. The class teacher, who also has primary responsibility for the pastoral care of the children in his/her class, will normally teach all aspects of the curriculum.
Class teaching and classroom support
Mrs Lawrence is the teacher in Class 1 (Reception and Year 1). Mrs Dee, our Deputy Head, is the Class 2 teacher (Years 1 and 2). Mrs Walmsley, Mrs Vaughan and Mrs Jones provide Learning Support across Key Stage 1 (Classes 1 and 2).
Mrs Whatley is the class teacher in Class 3 (Years 3 and 4). Mrs Pearce is the class teacher for Class 4 (Years 5 and 6). Mrs Fettes, Mrs Lancaster and Mrs Salter provide Learning Support across Key Stage 2 (Classes 3 and 4).
Mrs Blandford provides our teaching cover across the school to enable class teacher Planning, Preparation and Assessment (PPA) time and works in each class for a day a fortnight.
Mrs Hancocks is the school’s Administration Officer and is available in the school office from 8:30am until 3:30pm during term time.

The school day
The school day begins with registration at 9am. Children are welcome on the school premises from 8:45am (earlier by prior arrangement only). School normally ends at 3:15pm although a variety of after-school clubs are on offer through the week to both KS1 and KS2 children.
To ensure the safety of the children, the main foyer door is locked during school hours.
If you visit the school during the school day please always report to the school office in the first instance.
Lunchtimes
Lunch is usually eaten in the main hall with infants and juniors generally eating separately to ensure a quality experience for all involved. When the weather is good, those who bring a packed lunch may be permitted to eat outside. Children are looked after by our team of Lunchtime Supervisors, under the direction of Mrs Lancaster, our Senior Lunchtime Supervisor.
School meals are available through HC3S – the contracted caterer for Hampshire schools. The current cost of a school meal is £2.00. Children are welcome to bring a packed lunch. We ask that lunches are packed in plastic containers which are clearly marked with the child’s name. Hot liquids, fizzy drinks or glass containers should not be brought into school. Water is always freely available at lunchtime for those children who want it.
Breaktimes
All the children enjoy a morning break from 10:45-11am. Afternoon break is at the class teacher’s discretion. Infant children are entitled to a piece of fruit or vegetable as a breaktime snack. This is provided free-of-charge by the Government and children are encouraged to try the various fruits and vegetables on offer. As a healthy school we encourage our junior children to indulge in a fruit- or vegetable-based snack at breaktime. Children are also encouraged to bring water into school to keep them well hydrated during the school day. Please provide water in a clear plastic bottle, marked with the child’s name and ensure that the container is washed regularly at home.

To avoid confusion it is strongly advised that all clothing brought into school is clearly marked with the child’s name. A Lost Property box is located in Key Stage 2, where it has not been possible to reunite item
and pupil. Unclaimed items are subsequently donated to local charity shops at the end of each term.
The wearing of jewellery items such as earrings, bangles and necklaces is not permitted for safety reasons and during PE activities, watches must be removed and ear-studs removed or taped over, to avoid injury. (“Safety in physical education and sport” – Hampshire County Council, November 2006).
